John Steiner, MD, MPH, prominent health researcher, to lead
Kaiser Permanente’s Institute for Health Research

Kaiser Permanente Colorado is pleased to announce that a nationally recognized health services researcher, John Steiner, MD, MPH, has been named the new senior director of the Institute for Health Research (IHR) at Kaiser Permanente Colorado.

Dr. Steiner comes to Kaiser Permanente from the Colorado Health Outcomes Program, an organization he founded and directed for the past eight years at the University of Colorado Denver.

Prior to coming to Kaiser Permanente, Dr. Steiner also served as professor in the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center Division of General Internal Medicine.

Kaiser Permanente Colorado’s Institute for Health Research, now in its 16th year of operation, is a nationally recognized leader in health care and health policy research. Areas of expertise include disease prevention, health promotion, chronic disease management, and medication and vaccine safety. The Institute has a specific mission to conduct high quality research that can be directly translated into clinical practice.

As Senior Director, a new leadership position created to oversee the growing research arm at Kaiser Permanente, Dr. Steiner will be responsible for supervising investigators who are involved in hundreds of research projects annually, managing a $15 million research budget, and leading more than 120 scientists and staff.

Dr. Steiner graduated magna cum laude from Yale University and went on to receive his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar and holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine.

In addition to multiple leadership roles in the academic setting, Dr. Steiner’s expertise has been relied upon to advance several community and government health projects. Most recently, he served on the Colorado Health Report Card Advisory Committee and the Steering Committee for the Center for Improving the Value of Health Care for the Colorado State Department of Health Care Policy and Finance. His impressive list of professional accomplishments includes the following titles and honors:
Clinical/Affiliated Faculty Teaching Award, Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center
Florence Rena Sabin Award, recognizing contributions to the University of Colorado and the health of Colorado citizens
Current Chairman, Health Systems Research study section, Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research

Dr. Steiner assumes his new role at Kaiser Permanente Colorado on November 3, 2008.
