Ted E. Palen, PhD, MD, MSPH

Senior Clinician Investigator

Ted E. Palen, PhD, MD, MSPH, is a Senior Clinician Investigator at the Institute for Healthcare Research. His research interests are in the area of clinical informatics with a focus on understanding the flow of data from the point-of-care to its collection and use in research, decision support, chronic disease management, and quality of care. He also has a focus on virtual care options such as patient-physician email communication and telehealth.

Dr. Palen earned his Master of Science in Public Health degree at the University of Colorado, Denver, and completed his doctoral training in biochemistry at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He completed his medical training at the University of Colorado, Denver, where he also completed a residency in Internal Medicine. Dr. Palen's research focuses on improving the healthcare delivery process and is involved in implementing a range of point-of-care decision support and telehealth tools for use in clinical practice.

Dr. Palen is a practicing Internist and also the Manager of Clinical Reporting in the Resource Stewardship department at Kaiser Permanente Colorado. He is active in several professional associations, including serving as the Treasurer for the Colorado Chapter of the American College of Physicians and a Diplomate in Clinical Informatics of the American Board of Preventive Medicine.
